Terror on Moonbase Alpha – Chapter 6, Part 2
Jacob did his best to ignore the voice behind him, diving to the Lieutenant’s side, rolling her over – her face was a frozen mask of determination, even as the last gasps of air left her lips, she seemed to chase after them, refusing to let them go.
He looked up to the cameras, there was at least two that he could see. Where was everyone? This place should be flooded with DDF soldiers right now – he should be spread out on the ground with taser rounds. But it was just him, and her and the low, bemused chuckle behind him.
Setting to work, trying to remember the CPR course from a dozen or so years ago that he had barely listened to in the first place. They had been at a summer retreat and he had been focusing on the heaving breasts of the instructor more than anything. He thought of the tight, heavy bikini top and — NO!
Focus! He could feel the needles in his mind again, pulling him backward inside himself, trying to pull him away. Focus! Don’t let her die.
Roll her over, ear to mouth, listen for breath. Nothing.
Heart racing in his chest, he slapped himself hard across the face, focusing on the pain, sending the needle-legs in his mind scurrying back to the edges of his mind.
Hands over her chest, pump to the rhythm. The rhythm of what? It was a song, some ancient song that had no business surviving except for to remind people how to do CPR.
“You can tell by the way I use my walk, I’m a lover’s man no time to talk”
It was Kara’s voice, laced with venom. She was mocking him. “Stayin’ Alive, Stayin’ Alive…”
Fingers laced, the song blared in his mind but his mind wasn’t the one broadcasting it.
Focus! He pushed and pushed and pushed, her chest rising and falling, rising and falling beneath him. He felt the individual bones in her ribs flex and groan as he pushed down, as her heart flushed blood down into her arteries.
“You’re wasting your time. Even if you save her, I’m going to kill her. But, by all means, do your thing.”
Jacob felt the anger and frustration rising, he was tiring fast and she wasn’t coming around. Always, now in the back of his mind, he could feel her peeking, poking around.
Without a thought, with on great leap, Jacob thrust himself off the floor, spinning around and catching Kara across the jaw with his fist. In the milliseconds before his fist connected, saw the look of realization on her face and felt a last-ditch scramble to stop him. It hadn’t worked. The legs skittered across his mind but found no purchase as Jacob’s fist slammed home.
She spun and fell off the bed unceremoniously with a thud and Jacob felt that his mind, if only for the moment, was his once more.
He grabbed the red ‘Alarm’ button by Kara’s bed and pressed it. A light, ‘ding-ding-ding’ rang out in repetition as he went back to the Lieutenant’s side. Breathing into her mouth, thrusting his arms once more.
To his great relief, he heard the doors hiss open as several nurses rushed into the room.
“Help!” he cried. “Help, I need help!”
But the nurses ran past him, ran around him, as if they couldn’t see him. They ran to Kara’s side, helping her back on the bed.
“Please!” Jacob yelled, his voice strained, his arms ached.
“No. You don’t get to save her.” One of the nurses turned to face him, hands on her hips, as if looking down at a petulant child. Her face was twisted in anger.
“You don’t get to win, Jacob.”
Jacob sobbed, his massive shoulders screamed, he felt his arms weakening. He sucked in great lung-fulls of air, pushing himself past his limits. “Come on. Come on. Come on.”
He could feel them watching him, all of the eyes in the room had turned to him.
One nurse filled a syringe in front of him, it was a long needle and it was entirely for show.
He felt a terror that was all his own awaken within him, a primal beast of a thing that tore at the courage in his breast with long, fat swipes of its claws.
“Run.” Kara said.
“Run!” said the nurses.
“Run! Run! Run! Run!” They chanted, laughing in one sick, malevolent voice.
They began to close in on him.
The needle looming ever closer.
And Jacob ran.
And that wraps up Part 2 of Chapter 6, I hope you enjoyed it!
